Thank You for believing in me!

On behalf of the Committee to Elect Jermaine Reed for the 3rd District-In District Kansas City, Missouri; City Council, I would like to extend a very sincere and heartfelt thank you to the voters in the 3rd District for their gracious support of me.  I am committed to your mission to Energize and Restore the 3rd District through creating job opportunities, improving our neighborhoods, and empowering our youth.  I am truly humbled by your belief in me.

I am pledging to the voters that I will work effectively, professionally, and diligently with my City Council colleagues and newly elected Mayor to build relationships and coalitions, helping them to understand and support the problems and issues that we face in the District. I will emphasize to them that with their support; the 3rd District will retain its glory and health contributing to the vitality of the entire city.  Also, I want to remind residents that I was raised by a single mother who struggled and sacrificed to help me go to college and pursue my dreams, and I will work hard to ensure that every young person in the District, who would like to follow their dreams, gets the same positive opportunity that I was blessed to receive.

As I traveled around the community during the campaign season, meeting and greeting residents; as well as, participating in forums, my main theme centered on creating job opportunities…this is my first priority.  I would like to quote one of my mentors, Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II, who always says that the best economic development program is a job.  The 3rd District has the highest percentage of people living in poverty and one of the highest unemployment rates in the area at 14 percent. My specific approach to job creation will include working closely with state legislators and economic development organizations to provide incentives that will bring funds to the District, linking market-driven project job opportunities. I will also work with these entities and with small businesses to establish a neighborhood and sustainability job opportunity program.  Enhancing small businesses will be the key as they are the lifeblood of a community. Nationally small businesses have generated about 70 percent of new jobs annually according to SBA statistics; and overall, one in every two Americans in the private workforce is employed by or owns a small business.  My goal is to raise the stature of small businesses already located in the 3rd District and to explore ways that we can encourage start-up businesses to set up shop and thrive in the District. My plan will include researching and hopefully implementing tax-based incentives and business grants for small businesses that hire youth and 3rd District residents.

Of course, my plan for the 3rd District includes other issues such as neighborhood revitalization, crime reduction and comprehensive education programs, but I believe that if we can help put people to work this will be the first step in building confidence and pride once again in the great city of Kansas City.

Once again, I want to thank you for your vote.  I truly believe, with your help, WE WILL Energize and Restore the 3rd District.  God Bless us all!

Sunday Evening Campaign Reflections

Greetings!

I am preparing to attend the last fundraiser in support of our campaign to Energize & Restore the 3rd District.  The fundraiser is an event called VOTE & Bowl.

A number of Kansas City’s hottest entertainment groups approached me several weeks ago about coming together as a unified coalition to engage & encourage young people to get out to VOTE.  How could you say no to an ideal like this…throughout history, young people of all races have been the foundation for change not only in America but around World.  I became involved in community issues because my Mother’s desire to “get me involved.”  From that point, I was able to meet several mentors that have helped guide me in all facets of life…for that I’m eternally grateful!

This is one of the reasons why I am disappointed in my opponent Sharon Sanders-Brooks.  For months, she has stated that she wanted to run a campaign without negativity.  As I sit here and read this mailer from her campaign, it is far from the truth.  In case, there are some of you that take Ms Sanders-Brooks words as gospel, I would like to address some of the issues in this mailer that pertain to my campaign.  She states that I want to do the following….

Cut funding from law enforcement
My answer – NOT TRUE - I am the Chairman of the Board for the AD-Hoc Group Against Crime, an organization that mission is to reduce ALL crimes and be a champion for the safety & security of ALL residents in Kansas City, MO.  That goes against everything I have been working for within AD-Hoc for the last 15 years.

Has received numerous campaign contributions from liquor stores
My answer – As far as I know, I have received one campaign contribution from an owner of a convenience/grocery store…YES, this store does sell liquor.  YES, this business owner has a right to support any issue or candidate that he likes…he chose to support my campaign…and YES, I am grateful!  In my conversation with this owner, he mentioned that his family as been active in politics and he understood the commitment needed to be successful.  He also mentioned that he admired any young person that wants to make a difference and he offered a campaign contribution.  This is neither illegal nor immoral.

I want to cut funding for Kansas City Missouri School District
My answer – NOT TRUE – Throughout this campaign, I have continually highlighted a need to empower our youth…through tutoring, mentoring, internships, and additional after-school programs…you can not accomplish this by cutting funding

Just moved to Missouri to run for this election
My answer – NOT TRUE – I am a life-long resident of the 3rd District…a scholar of the Kansas City Missouri School District.  Like many young adults, I went off to school to obtain a degree from the University of MissouriColumbia.  And, like many graduates, I received a job opportunity away from my hometown.  I accepted this job, while maintaining my Kansas City residency. I excelled in this position and received an opportunity to return home with a new job offered by the Green Impact Zone to help residents throughout the urban core.  I decided to leave the Green Impact Zone, so that I can concentrate on running for the 3rd District City Council.

Was busted for failing to pay my taxes
My answer – NOT TRUE – How was I busted?  Like many residents, I unfortunately forgot to pay a bill.  Fortunately, once this was bought to my attention, I immediately made contact with the proper personnel to determine cost and fees…and bought myself current on this matter.  If my memory serves me correct Ms Sanders-Brooks, you had a very similar situation in 2007, but it pertained to some houses that you were sited for as being an absentee landlord.  I think the Kansas City Call ran an article on this issue recently.

It is unfortunate that Ms Sanders-Brooks wants to run a negative campaign two days before the General Election.  This shows me that Ms Sanders-Brooks has a lack of honesty and integrity; as well as, an inability to be an effective leader and role model.  The 3rd District needs leadership…
  • that can effectively connect with people to get a job done
  • that has developed & communicated a 3rd District Plan that will enhance the lives of our residents
  • that cares about people and not political games
I think the Saturday Edition of the Kansas City Star said it best…http://www.kansascity.com/2011/03/19/2738821/the-stars-recommendations-a-new.html

“In the 3rd District, Jermaine Reed is young and eager to serve an urban core area sadly lacking positive leadership from the incumbent, Sharon Sanders Brooks,”

I strongly believe that I am the LEADER that the 3rd District needs.  This campaign has been an eye-opening experience…I’m about to step into this event….I hope to see you tonight, it started  at 6pm at the VOTE & Bowl Fundraiser at the Lucky Strikes in the KCP&L District.

But, most importantly, I hope that you GO VOTE on Tuesday, March 22nd.  If you are comfortable with a hard-working, no-nonsense political servant…with no plan for the 3rd District and has little to show for her four years in City Council than I may not be your candidate.

But, if you are looking to Energize & Restore the 3rd District by creating jobs, improving our neighborhood, and empowering our youth…VOTE Jermaine Reed for City Council on Tuesday, March 22nd.  The polls open at 6am!

Thanks to all that have volunteered…made contributions…offered wisdom and encouragement…I am humbled by your belief in me!  God Bless!

The REED Plan III

The REED Plan III
The Mission: Energize & Restore the 3rd District by Empowering Our Youth

Throughout my life, I’ve had awesome mentors that have assisted and guided me through various stages of my life – social growth, education, volunteerism, and employment.  The youth voice is often overlooked as many are often characterized and stereotyped as the source of crime and violence in the city.

The REED Plan Position
I am committed to the intellectual and social growth of our youth through opportunities for volunteering with small businesses, increased after-school tutoring and expanded relationships with youth and city officials.
Our Plan 1
Expose our youth to a wide variety of career options and assist them in developing marketable job skills.

How we work Plan 1
Provide internship opportunities through the City; as well as, initiate collaborative internship opportunities with County & State Officials for 3rd District Youth.

Our Plan 2
Increase mentoring opportunities for 3rd District Youth.

How we work Plan 2
Partner with Boy and Girls Clubs, PREP-KC, Youthnet, the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department and other organizations to recruit mentors and youth into their programs.

Our Plan 3
Expand tutoring programs and develop educational enrichment opportunities for 3rd District Youth.

How we work Plan 3
  • Connect with Kauffman Scholars, W.E.B. Dubois Learning Center, the Urban League of Greater Kansas City; as well as, other organizations providing tutoring to improve their chances of academic success.
  • Utilize repurposed KCMSD Property to act as a tutoring hub and community center so that 3rd-district youth have constructive after-school activities and a safe place to spend their leisure time.
Our Plan 4
Ensure all 3rd-district children have access to high-quality, early-childhood education.

How we work Plan 4
Support the funding of KCMSD pre-K programs and nonprofit organizations providing early childhood programs, such as Operation Breakthrough.

I will continue to be a stakeholder in the lives of Kansas City Youth as I realize that youth empowerment is the direct link to breathing a fresh vitalization into the 3rd District.

The REED Plan II

The REED Plan II
The Mission: Energize & Restore the 3rd District by Improving Our Neighborhood

The 3rd District has more than 26 neighborhood associations and clubs and is home to more than 74,000 residents. I believe this rich and diverse district can be the flagship of urban re-development in our great city.

Currently, in Kansas City, our neighborhoods are threatened by…
  • vacant & dangerous housing
  • high-energy housing;
  • excessive amount of crime;
  • and, limited community amenities.

The REED Plan Position
I will support initiatives to rehabilitate foreclosed homes, develop new housing on vacant lots, remove dangerous buildings, and address rental property maintenance and absentee ownership issues.  Also, as your 3rd District Councilman, I will push to increase the use of alternative energy sources and energy-saving techniques; as well as, maintain the 3rd District’s commitment to preserving historic spaces and beautiful parks landscapes.

Our Plan 1Reduce the amount of violent crime in the 3rd district and promote an atmosphere of security and safety, creating an economically sustainable, walkable 3rd District.

How we work Plan 1
  • Work closely with East and Central Patrol to ensure every neighborhood in the 3rd district is assigned a neighborhood police officer and increase the hours of neighborhood policing.
  • Increase the amount of security cameras throughout the 3rd district.
  • Upgrade and improve police officers’ equipment and technology to assist in crime prevention and increase arrest rate.
  • Create youth junior police and officer mentoring programs to improve relationship between 3rd District youth and police department

Our Plan 2
Reduce blight and provide more affordable and safe housing.

How we work Plan 2
  • Provide free dumpsters to neighborhood associations for monthly cleanups to enable residents to improve the appearance of their neighborhoods, block by block. This effort would be coordinated with the City’s Waste Management Department.
  • Partner with Habitat for Humanity and neighborhood associations to reclaim blighted properties through use of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program and other similar programs.
  • Enforce codes and regulations and general upkeep of properties owned by local and absentee landlords.
  • Initiate and promote a 3rd-district and city-wide Clean Up Kansas City Campaign.

Our Plan 3
Increase amenities with the 3rd District
  • Increase the number of high-quality grocery stores available to 3rd district residents.
  • Examine opportunities to create community gardens and a 3rd District Market for the sale of fresh & organic produce
  • Attract national retail store chains to the 3rd district through tax incentives and building relationships with companies that would add to the walkability of the 3rd district.

I will work enthusiastically to create opportunities and solutions that improve our neighborhoods in the 3rd District.

The REED Plan I

The REED Plan I
The Mission: Energize & Restore the 3rd District with Job Opportunities

It may be a HUGE issue around our great country, but there is no doubt, the single most important issue we face today in Kansas City is Job Opportunities for everybody …Stability, Growth & Maintenance!

Currently, in Kansas City, our employment environment is threatened by…
a strained economy;
  • limited funding resources for new business start-ups;
  • reduced tax-based incentives for businesses to hire employees;
  • and, the threat of jobs leaving our city headed to the State of Kansas.

The REED Plan Position
I am committed to growing the small-business sector that runs throughout the entire 3rd district. I believe that a strong small-business community is a vital partner in the sustainability of the 3rd district and its residents.

Our Plan 1
Work with small-business coalitions and individual small businesses to assist in allocating State and City resources such as TIFs and other small-business grants, which will increase business growth and success throughout the 3rd District and these commercial corridors:
  • Troost Av
  • Independence Av
  • Prospect Av
  • Truman Rd
  • 12th Street
  • the Historic Jazz District of 18th and Vine.
How we work Plan 1
Pursue partnerships with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Northeast Chamber of Commerce, Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, Urban League of Greater Kansas City, University of Missouri Small-Business Technology Development Center and Kauffman Foundation…these relationship provide vital support and guidance for small businesses.

Our Plan 2
Create a City neighborhood sustainability and job opportunity program to create job opportunities for 3rd-district residents and increase the customer base for 3rd-district businesses.

How we work Plan 2

  • Pursue tax-base incentives for small businesses that hire youth & elderly or in-district residents.
  • Work with the City Council and established governmental relationship to determine product trade opportunities outside of Kansas City.
  • Work in a collaborative effort with the City Council, County Legislature, and State Representatives to create an incentive program that will help maintain businesses in Kansas City.
It is through the vitality of our small businesses and their ability to employ residents of the 3rd district that we will achieve true neighborhood sustainability.

We are still in the RACE!

Greetings!

On behalf of the Committee to Elect Jermaine Reed, I would like to offer greetings to the Voters of the 3rd District and thank you for showing your support by voting for me in Kansas City’s Primary Election.  We had an awesome showing of over 28% of the votes in our 3rd District In-District Race.  The best news is….our campaign continues; we will move into the General Election on Tuesday, March 22nd.

Today, at this moment, we find ourselves on the verge of great change and awesome opportunity.  From residents, small business owners, churches, and other organizations of the 3rd District; OUR message to Energize & Restore has been heard…loud and clear!

My friends please believe me when I say, not only to the 3rd District but to all of Kansas City…the time to energize & restore is now.

When we energize & restore, WE no longer accept empty promises made to gain our votes at the expense of our personal prosperity…at the expense of our young people’s futures…nor at the expense of our families’ safety.

When we energize & restore, the 3rd District can no longer be referred to as the blighted area of town, but as the diverse heart of our great City, offering all the City’s residents a chance to stroll & experience its historic presence.

When we energize & restore, the 3rd District can be recognized as one of the City’s largest commercial areas, presenting all of Kansas City with the opportunity to create & support small businesses which are vital to giving us needed services, consumer goods; and of course, much…needed… jobs.

Today, I am asking for YOU to partner with me to bring the unique issues facing the 3rd District to the top of the City’s agenda in hopes of reversing decades of neglect and to start the process of energizing and restoring.

As we move forward into the general election, I want to assure the residents of the 3rd District that I hear your vision….this campaign is all about you…this campaign is your vision.  Just like you, I want to live in a district that is beautiful and self-sustainable, offering ALL who call it home a place to work, rest, play, worship, and prosper.

As we move forward into the general election, I will be asking more residents to join with us in sending a unified message…a message that we are no longer separated by petty differences, but joined together in a coalition of optimism, enthusiasm, and determination.

Without getting into any technicalities and to dismiss any rumors, please respectively understand this point, as of Friday afternoon, February 18th, and re-confirmed on Monday morning, February 21st, there are ONLY two (2) candidates in this 3rd District-In District Race; and I AM one of the candidates that is moving forward to the General Election.  So please, do not allow your vote to be misrepresented or cast in vain.

I am humbled by the journey that has brought us this far in our campaign.
I am humbled by the countless number of citizens who have trusted me to share their frustrations about City Government and their representatives.  Also, I am humbled by the countless stories of what residents love about Kansas City because those are the stories that remind us that we have so much worth fighting for…and so much to preserve.

Once again, for those who went out to the polls and supported us with your vote, we say thank you. For those who feel as though their voice is still not being heard or you believe that a positive change is needed, we ask that you join us. Join the momentum that is moving this campaign to the four corners of the 3rd District and all the way to City Hall.

This race has not been won nor is it over.  The road which lies ahead will be a difficult one, but I am confident that together…shoulder to shoulder…WE CAN AND WILL bring back the grandeur…the respect….and the passion that is the 3rd District; therefore enhancing the lives of not only those in the 3rd District, but those in this great City…the City we call home.

In conclusion, I am asking for your help…your continued financial and volunteer support…and most important, your vote in the General Election on March 22nd to energize and restore the 3rd District of Kansas City, Missouri.

I thank you in advance….God Bless You!

Creating Job Opportunities

As part of my campaign, I am committed to growing businesses throughout the 3rd district.

Job opportunity is vital to the livelihood and survival of our residents.

By focusing on businesses, we will employ residents, increase our tax base, and bring sustainability to the 3rd district.

This is our we energize and restore.

My thoughts to the Judges’ decision on Mr. Fletcher Residency ruling...

As you know, the Jackson County Circuit Court rendered their decision on whether Mr. Fletcher has fulfilled his residency requirements to be an official candidate in a City of Kansas City, Missouri Election.

The most important piece of bringing clarity and communication to this issue is that “the people; the residents of the 3rd District,” opinions and concerns where heard and a speedy solution was addressed.  Now, that is how we energize & restore…this is the heart of the Jermaine Reed for 3rd District City Council Campaign.

With less than 3 days before the primary election, on Tuesday, February 22nd, I am still focused on spreading our message of Energizing & Restoring the 3rd District.  This is where my passion is…improving and enhancing our residents lives and moving our message to victory.
This is the only way to echo the positive responses and wishes we have been hearing from our constituency.
I hope that ALL voters will show up at the polls on Tuesday, February 22nd at 6am and support our efforts to Energize and Restore the 3rd District.
Thank you!
Jermaine Reed

Empowering our Youth

As a part of my campaign, I am committed to the intellectual and social growth of our youth through….

·         jobs, internships, and volunteerism
·         increased after-school programs and tutoring sessions
